Banana Splits for Breakfast: 55 Ways to Spiritually Guide Your Preschooler – A Review

Banana Splits for Breakfast: 55 Ways to Spiritually Guide Your Preschooler

I’m always looking for fun ways to spiritually engage my children.  When I heard about the book, Banana Splits for Breakfast: 55 Ways to Spiritually Guide Your Preschooler by Dr. Susan Harrison, my interest was piqued. I saw this book as a tool to assist me in teaching my boys how awesome our God is!

The book has 55 different chapters on ways to engage your preschooler spiritually.  Each chapter starts with a bible verse, followed by a story with christian themes. Some chapters include lists of activities to do with your child. Links to reputable organizations and books are also included.  The book has a little over 90 pages, so it won’t take long for you to read it.

I found the book to be very easy to read with lots of food for thought in it.  In Chapter 24, Dr. Harrison wrote something that stuck with me. It’s basically the theme of the book.  Here’s what she said:

“Your church leaders are not a substitution for your spiritual leadership as a parent.” – Dr. Susan Harrison

That’s pretty deep isn’t it? But it’s true! We will be held accountable for how we teach and raise our children.  I definitely want to set my children up for success, not just in the natural, but spiritually as well!  I believe this book will help pave the way for the spiritual success of many families.

Dr. Harrison included ideas for several activities that I’ve never thought about before, such as prayer walks with your children and keeping a journal of your child’s spiritual progress. Her experience as a children’s ministry director shows throughout this book.

In my humble opinion, this book could be better served as a daily devotional. This is not a book that you want to read in one sitting. Each chapter has so many spiritual nuggets and activities in it that you need time to actually reflect on what’s being said and implement it into your daily life.  This book is marketed towards parents with preschoolers, but I think these same activities would work well with older children as well.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone with school aged children.  It would be a great book for MOPS groups or a bible study group for moms.
