Moving affects everyone in the family, even preschoolers.
We’ve been at our new base for a little over a month now. About two weeks ago, Little Man came up to me and said, “Myles?” At first, I didn’t understand what he had said. But later in the day, he said it again, “Myles?” Then it clicked. Little Man was asking for one of his friends that lived at our old base.
I gave Little Man a big hug and told him that we don’t live near Myles anymore, but maybe we could plan a trip to visit him one day. Later that evening, I called Myles’s mom and told her what happened. We decided to put the boys on FaceTime. In case you don’t know, FaceTime is a free videoconference feature that is available on iPhones, iPads, iPod Touch, and Mac computers.
We set everything up and the boys were so excited to see each other! It actually became quite comical because Myles would get a toy and show it to Little Man. Then Little Man would get a toy and show it to Myles. Then they would push their toys on the floor, almost as if they were playing side by side.
The boys also had several toys alike. Myles got “Red the Firetruck” from the movie Cars. Then Daniel got his “Red the Firetruck.” Myles got his helicopter. Then Little Man got his helicopter. The cycle repeated itself for Lightning McQueen and a few other toys.
The boys had a great virtual playdate. Little Man hasn’t had a chance to make friends here yet, but I hope he finds a good friend that he connects with like he did with Myles.
How has your child adapted to moving away from friends or to having a friend move away?
