A Virtual Playdate

Moving affects everyone in the family, even preschoolers.

We’ve been at our new base for a little over a month now. About two weeks ago, Little Man came up to me and said, “Myles?” At first, I didn’t understand what he had said. But later in the day, he said it again, “Myles?” Then it clicked. Little Man was asking for one of his friends that lived at our old base.

I gave Little Man a big hug and told him that we don’t live near Myles anymore, but maybe we could plan a trip to visit him one day. Later that evening, I called Myles’s mom and told her what happened. We decided to put the boys on FaceTime. In case you don’t know, FaceTime is a free videoconference feature that is available on iPhones, iPads, iPod Touch, and Mac computers.

We set everything up and the boys were so excited to see each other! It actually became quite comical because Myles would get a toy and show it to Little Man. Then Little Man would get a toy and show it to Myles. Then they would push their toys on the floor, almost as if they were playing side by side.

The boys also had several toys alike. Myles got “Red the Firetruck” from the movie Cars. Then Daniel got his “Red the Firetruck.” Myles got his helicopter. Then Little Man got his helicopter. The cycle repeated itself for Lightning McQueen and a few other toys.

The boys had a great virtual playdate. Little Man hasn’t had a chance to make friends here yet, but I hope he finds a good friend that he connects with like he did with Myles.

How has your child adapted to moving away from friends or to having a friend move away?

    How AWESOME. 🙂
My husband uses FaceTime ALL THE TIME (almost every day) to connect with his best bud in California. (We are in Maine.) It has been amazing… through it, we have met each others family, and really feel like have FELLOWSHIP with them… We have prayed together over facetime, and it is just… awesome.

    🙂

That sounds great! It’s amazing how technology allows us to connect with people. That was the first time I ever really used FaceTime, but I plan to use it a lot more! Thanks for stopping by my blog. Have a blessed week!

This might not be the same. When we moved across town, our son was four and a half and had been through neurosurgery that summer. He was sad about moving because he didn’t want to leave the boys next door. They were older than he was. But they were the only boys around our section of our trailer court. Hubby took our son up to what would be our new neighborhood and showed him the school he’d be going to in another year. The our son was happy. I’m glad you had the idea of having a virtual playdate. It seems it would make things easier for separated family members.

Hi Cecelia! Yes, I think that’s a similar situation. Your husband’s idea of showing him the new school and neighborhood was a good one. It’s easy as adults to overlook the effects of a move on a little one. We have to be sure to include them in the process.
Thanks for stopping by my blog and have a blessed week!
