I’ve been feeling kinda down lately. Deployment blues got the best of me. My husband missed my birthday and some very important events in our son’s life. I’m not even going to backtrack and mention the holidays.
I talked to one of my military spouse friends about how I was feeling. She could relate on a personal level because she’s been through it more times than what is fair. But little did I know about her plan to lift my spirits…
My friend rallied up our other military spouse friends and planned a surprise birthday party for me!
They coordinated with my mother-in-law, who happened to be in town visiting. My mother-in-law went outside for something and came back in with about 12 people following her, all good friends of mine! I was so surprised!
One of my friends spent the whole morning cooking fried chicken, cabbage, yams, and macaroni and cheese. My mother-in-law made sweet potato pies and a baked chicken. Other friends came through the door with cups, plates, ice, silverware, flowers, cards, and everything else you need to throw a party.
Here is my birthday cake:
I thank God for my friends! I was feeling so down before they came in the door! All I could think of was the trip my husband and I planned for my birthday and how we had to cancel it at the last minute. I felt lonely and depressed. But God touched the hearts of my friends and they came through, showing me His love in my time of need.
Having a good network of friends is important. One of my former pastors used to say, “The banana that gets separated from the bunch gets peeled and eaten.”
If you are feeling lonely and depressed, I encourage you to get in the company of those that love and care about you. It will definitely brighten your outlook!
