Gifts that Last a Lifetime…

Little Man Reading a Book

Dear Hubby and I have been participating in the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University since January 2010. Our goal was to become debt free by December 31, 2010. However, we wanted to be together when we officially became debt free. We decided to pay off the rest of our debt early as our Christmas gifts to each other. We are so excited and feel like a load is off our backs! Now we’re working on Baby Step #3. Here is a link to all of the baby steps.

Two weeks after Dear Hubby left, we received a package at the front door. It was addressed to Little Man from the USO. While on the way to his deployed location, Dear Hubby stopped by the USO and participated in the United Through Reading program. Inside the package was three books: a Dr. Seuss book, a counting book with Elmo, and a record the story book with Dear Hubby’s voice. The package also included a DVD with Dear Hubby reading the Dr. Seuss and Elmo book with a personal message to Little Man.

I first gave Little Man the record a story book, Guess How Much I Love You.

When Little Man opened it, he heard Dear Hubby’s voice and said, “DADA!!!” I couldn’t get him to put the book down. Little Man took the book everywhere that he went, even to the dinner table. When it was bed time, he ran to the living room, grabbed his book, and slept with it that night.

We had a Christmas celebration in November with Little Man before Dear Hubby deployed. We bought him some trucks and cars with a few learning toys. But this simple gift of books with his Dad’s voice meant more to him than any truck or car. It’s a gift he can cherish for years to come.

I encourage you to not be stressed about spending a lot of money for Christmas. It’s not about how much you spend or how many toys you buy. Do what you can and be in peace with that, knowing that you’ve given from the heart.

May God’s peace and joy be with you and your family during this holiday season and the year to come!

What a special gift! We had our kids grandparents do some recordable books for them.
    Good luck getting debt free!

We did the Financial Peace University too! Huge DR fans 🙂

That is just so sweet that your husband got those books and sent you the DVD! I love how excited your son was and that he couldn’t put the book down. My hubby is only at training, but since he knew he was going to be gone for 5 months, we recorded him reading a bunch of books to my daughter before he left. She watches one of the videos before bed most nights.

What a great gift from daddy!
The best gifts don’t come in a box, they come from the heart!
So glad your son can have dada “with” him while he’s deployed!

I pray your family has a very Merry Christmas!

Those books are precious. Depending our your little man’s age, he will remember them for several years. I wish you a blessed Christmas and a fruitful New Year.

    Hey Tonya,

That was a very nice and creative gift. Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year! Give Little Man a hug for me, then ask Little Man to hug you for me ;-).
