iPhone Apps for Christians

I have a confession to make. It may take some of you by surprise, but that’s okay.

**Taking a deep breath**

I’m a computer and technology geek.

Are you surprised?

I love computers, phones, cameras, video cameras, and any other thing that is electronic. I see it as a personal challenge whenever I can’t figure out how to work a gadget or computer program.

I’m also a fan of Apple products. I never thought that would happen because I was seriously all about PCs. My husband was the one that changed my mind. He bought me an iPhone to replace the Palm Treo that I had. At first, I was a little disappointed because I really liked my Palm Treo and the compatibility it had with Windows. However, it didn’t take me long to adjust to my new phone.

My husband and I recently upgraded our iPhones. It was needed because I had a few broken parts on my phone and my husband’s phone hardly ever rang (he still had the 1st Generation iPhone). When the iPhone 4.0 was announced, we made sure that we were able to get ours on the launch date. I stood in line 3.5 hours to get my husband’s phone (he was working) and waited one hour to get my phone.

Don’t judge me.

But anyway, we are enjoying our new phones. We have yet to experience any issues, despite all of the drama reported about signal problems.

One thing that I really like about iPhones is the variety of apps available.  Here are some wonderful FREE apps I found that are great for Christians.

  • Bible by LifeChurch.tv.  You’ll have 41 translations of the Bible in 22 languages right at your fingertips. It’s one of my favorites. You can search throughout the bible, choose reading plans, and bookmark scripture.  Found a scripture that you really like?  Share it with your friends on Twitter and Facebook easily through this app.

  • Concordance by Matthew S.  This app is a bible concordance.  In the search area, type in what you would like to research and several options are listed for that search topic.  For example, if I want to do a search on Abraham, I would type in “Abraham” and several options will show up with the scripture references.

  • Pocket Prayer Pro (Lite) by Roland Yau. Track the progress of your prayer requests.  You can list 10 prayer requests in this version. If you want to add more prayer requests to track, you can upgrade to the full version for $1.99.  Sample prayers are offered and you can even send them to your friends. This app comes with a passcode lock so that you can keep your prayer requests private.

  • K-LOVE Positive and Encouraging by Jacobs Media. Listen to commercial free contemporary Christian music. You can send in prayer requests to the Pastors on staff and they will pray for you.  Another cool feature is that this app contains an alarm clock option in which you can wake up to streaming contemporary Christian music.

  • KJV Bible Audiobook by iTourSoftware.com.  This app contains an audio version of the entire King James Version Bible.  Let me give you a heads up. This is a huge app, taking almost 10 minutes to completely load, but it’s totally worth it. It also contains maps and geography, other bible translations, and the history of the King James Bible.   Options are available for bookmarks, notes, daily reading, and searching.

  • Bible Memory Verses by Woody Hays.  Bible topics such as forgiveness, prayer, and sin are available with memory verses.  You can record yourself saying the memory verse and play it back.  A flashcard option is also available in which you can view the scripture (for example John 3:16), practice the verse, and press a button to see if you recited it correctly.

Do you have any apps to add to this list?

Great list! My favorite is the Bible Shaker. It lets you get scripture based on topics like stress, love, faith, etc. http://bibleshaker.com

Tonya, I don’t see Bible Shaker on your list. This is one app that you really need to check out. It lets you get scripture based on topics like Anger, Baptism, Depression, etc. Really cool app that is good for quick scripture!

Love this list of Christian apps! I thought your readers would be interested in a new app our family made – the Bible HIStory Game. It is a fun way for kids and families to learn how the events of the Bible and ancient history flow together. We hope you like it! Rob Rienow

Simple Flash Card Maker – Make your own flash cards to help you memorise almost anything
Dependency, an Australian software developer, (www.dependencysoftware.com) has recently released the latest version of their iOS app “Simple Flash Card Maker”. An easy to use app for creating and drilling your own flash cards.
Great for elementary maths. Indispensable for language study. Memorise your favorite Bible verses. Learn key facts for upcoming examinations.
Each card has two sides, you can drill yourself with either side hidden.
Each side can have multiple blocks of text of the same or varying sizes. And the text can be in any language that can be entered using the keyboard.
Make as many decks as you want. Add as many cards as you want to a deck. Add cards as you go and build your decks over time.
If you know a card really well you can set it to be ignored from the drills. You can also ignore cards if want to reduce the size of the deck until you get to know it better, and then you can add them back in a few at a time.
Cards are presented in random order during a drill. If you get a card right it will be removed from the drill. If you get it wrong it will get shuffled back in and it will come back.
Regular review is the key to memorising anything – now you can do it anywhere, anytime
Simple Flash Card Maker check it out

Not Just Words – A Bible search app that uses a built in thesaurus
Dependency, an Australian software developer, (www.dependencysoftware.com) has recently released the latest version of their free iOS app “Not Just Words”. A Bible search application which uses a thesaurus to find related words for those annoying times when you can’t quite remember a verse exactly. So searching for “Jesus” for example, will also find references to “Christ” and “Lord”.
Of course it can also search for combinations of words with and, or, and not. So, “Adam not Eve” will find all the verses which have Adam in them but not Eve.
And it automatically searches for other forms of words. So, searching for “pray” will also find verses which have “pray”, “prays”, “prayer”, “praying”, “prayed”. Or turn on the thesaurus to include “asked”, “requested”, “inquired” and all their variants as well.
You can also restrict your search to particular books or chapters of the Bible… So, “Moses and Psalms” will find all the verses in Psalms which mention Moses. And combinations are built up as they go, so “Exodus or Psalms and Moses” will find references to Moses in either book.
You can search for a list of references separated by semicolons. So, “Rom 1:4; Jn 3:16; Eph 2:8-9” will find those verses for you in a second. This is a great feature if another app has provided you with the list and you just want to see the verses. Just paste the list and off you go.
You can also copy the results of your search to the clipboard for use in other apps. Either one verse or the whole search result (within the limits allowed for free use of the texts).
Currently Not Just Words searches NIV, NKJV, NASB and AMP versions of the Bible.
Making finding the verses easy to help you make the most of every opportunity.
Not Just Words check it out

Hi there, I have one for you that you don’t have in your list…
its the Blue Letter Bible app. It is everything their website is but in the palm of your hand: bible (multiple versions), concordance, Greek and Hebrew interlinear text, a search tool that is incredible, a treasury of scripture knowledge, daily reading plans, and much more. I know I may sound like a sales person, but after using this I was so convinced that every believer should know about it I tell everyone. If you treasure the Word, you will surely treasure this app!

I was planning to buy a Nokia E7 when a friend showed me his iphone 3gs. I right away fell for it. It is a great phone if you are a Christian who is into reading scripture, theology books, and are into Christian radio. The apps recommended in this site by Christian Mommy Writer are all very good ones and I have them all on my iphone and am enjoying them. It is worth investing in an iphone. Good post!

Thanks a bunch for this list of Christian apps!

I have one to add to the list!

It’s called “Bible Lock Screens” and it has free lock screen backgrounds for the iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch with Scripture on them.

These backgrounds are great for putting the Bible into your daily life. They put Scripture in your mind, every time you use your device.

Setting Scripture as your lock screen can help you memorize key verses, share the Gospel with others, and remind you do the right thing during a tough time. If you have the Word of God on your mind, you are much more likely to do what it says (James 1:22 NIV).

There is a free native app for iPhone / iPad in the App Store. Just go to iTunes and search “Bible Lock Screens” and you’ll find it. Or check this link: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bible-lock-screens-bible-wallpapers/id414174774?mt=8

    The website is: http://www.BibleLockScreen.com

If you like it, please consider adding it to your list!

    😀

Thanks so much for making a website dedicated to helping Christians find awesome apps!

    God bless you!

It was great to see you comment on my blog last week! ;0) Congrats on your interview with Military Moms … that is so exciting! ;0) I am going to She Speaks this week and am so excited about that! Have you been to a writing conference? If not, you HAVE to go! So worth every penny.
