This past weekend, we took a road trip to visit family and had a wonderful time!
My mother-in-law (MIL), brother-in-law’s girlfriend (BILG) and I headed off to do some shopping while the guys went to a baseball game. During our outing, we talked about various beauty techniques and eyebrow threading came up.
Eyebrow threading is an ancient method of hair removal, which is popular in Middle Eastern countries. They use a cotton piece of thread that is rolled over the hair to be plucked from the follicle. It is better than tweezing because it removes more hair at a time.
Here is a video clip that explains it more.
Both my MIL and BILG had their eyebrows threaded before. They spoke highly of it and suggested that I get it done too. When I asked what it was like, my MIL said that it hurt, but my BILG said that it didn’t.
Hmmm….which one is it?
The topic of eyebrow threading didn’t come up again until the next day when my MIL, son, and I went out to get some groceries for a cookout. The conversation went like this:
MIL: “Do you want to get your eyebrows threaded today?”
Me: “Hmmm…(thinks about it)….Yeah. I’ll get them done today.”
My MIL took me to a beauty shop, not too far from where we were going. A nice Middle Eastern lady greeted us as we walked in. My MIL tells the lady, “She wants to get her eyebrows threaded and it is her first time.”
Uh-oh. Was that code for “go easy on her?”
“We’ll be back in a while. We are going next door,” says my MIL as she grabbed my son’s hand.
I sat in the chair and the lady asked me to hold part of my eye. I guess that was so she can get the skin to hold steady and be firm.
Let’s just say that I wasn’t ready for the pain that followed.
I felt every single hair being plucked from the root. The “ouch factor” was definitely in full effect.
Every time she pulled the thread, I jumped. My eyes were watering like crazy.
Another lady walked up and handed me a tissue. She and the lady doing my eyebrows started talking to each other in their native language. They probably were saying, “She’s such a baby! Why don’t she just put on her big girl panties and suck it up?!”
After about 10 minutes of torture, the nice lady was done with my eyebrows. She smiled as she gave me a mirror.
My eyebrows looked great! I typically get my eyebrows waxed, but threading gives them a more natural and fuller look.
As if on cue, my MIL and son came back in the shop. She told me that she didn’t want my son to see me crying.
It probably wouldn’t have hurt as bad, if I hadn’t waited until my eyebrows looked like Bert’s on Sesame Street.
Guys totally don’t understand what we go through to enhance our beauty.
Have you ever tried eyebrow threading before?
What was your experience like?
